Good Morning Sunshine

Imagine my surprise!

I woke up this morning and had a lovely surprise when Angela at Hashtag Retired  https://hashtagretired.com nominated me for a Sunshine Blogger Award! Many thanks to you Angela, it is such a nice feeling to know that others appreciate and follow one’s work! I enjoy your blog, and look forward to your posts.

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given by bloggers to peers who they feel are creative, positive, and inspiring while spreading sunshine to the blogging community. The award also helps other blogger receive recognition and exposure for their blogs.

Rules for the Sunshine Blogger Award, How it Works:

  1. Thank the blogger(s) who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 (or so) questions the blogger asked you.
  3. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award in your blog post.
  4. Nominate 11 (or so) new bloggers & their blogs. Do leave a comment on their blog to let them know they received the award and ask your nominees 11 (or so) new questions.

What a great way to promote the writers you’ve come to appreciate, and to get to know them better, as well as to find new blogs through this “round robin” process! Although I enjoyed answering all of Angela’s questions, I wouldn’t impose the “11” rule on anyone, so please feel free to modify if need by!

Here are my answers to Angela’s Questions:

  • How would you describe your blog?

My blog is all about rethinking traditional home recipes, most often New England based but not necessarily, and giving them a modern twist of some sort. I like to lighten them up, swap out ingredients that reflect how we live, shop, and eat today. With changes in our eating habits as well as a full array of food allergies and intolerances, cooking for a family is often challenging, and I hope to offer alternatives to the way many of us learn to cook.

  • Of all the posts you’ve written, which is your favorite?

I think it would have to be last summer’s creation of a wedding cake which had to be non-dairy. It was quite a process, and I learned so much along the way making this beautiful cake:  Mariah’s non-dairy wedding cake.

  • What was the last book you read, and how did you like it?

My new mystery love is a series set in Brittany by author Jean-Luc Bannalec featuring Commissioner Georges Dupin as the investigating officer. His descriptions of the Brittany coast are superb, one can almost feel the magical sunlight touching your face! Great characterizations, and the plotting is excellent. Currently, I’m reading his latest  “The Killing Tide.”

  • Have you ever written a short story or a novel?

I’ve written quite a few short stories, and one novella, which I now hate and will rewrite…

  • Do you speak more than one language?

I use to speak fluent French. I grew up with a French Canadian uncle living across the road from me who gave me my first lessons, then I studied Parisian French in high school. Sadly, the bulk of it now seems to be locked in the grey cells somewhere! Tant pis!

  • What are your three all-time favorite films?

This would depend on what day you ask me, there are so many! My favorite food film is Babette’s Feast, which I haven’t seen in a while, so perhaps it is time to feast on it again. If I want to laugh, there is nothing funnier than the all-star It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, or something Monty Python.  I could watch Casablanca time and time again and it never gets old, or just about anything Spencer and Tracey. The African Queen. Papillon. Beetlejuice. It Takes a Thief. The holiday season wouldn’t be complete without It’s a Wonderful Life. Then there’s Murder on the Orient Express (1974 please), King of Hearts, or To Kill a Mockingbird. For the best ending of all time, Cinema Paradiso. Well, I’ve already far surpassed my limit of three so I’ll stop here. Wait a minute, I’ve just change my mind…

  • What is your favorite thing about spring (if you are northern hemisphere) or fall (if you are southern hemisphere)?

Early spring is my favorite time of year because it is all about possibilities. You see and feel the beautiful green shoots emerging, the light changing, the weather warming, the rains beginning, and it is all new. No bugs, no weeds, no humidity, only hopes of what’s to come.

  • What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

I have too many to call any one my favorite, and I dance around with them all depending on my mood: music, photography, quilting, gardening, sketching, writing poetry. Oh, and cooking of course!

  • What is your favorite holiday, and why?

My favorite holiday is the Easter or other Spring celebrations and gathering. It’s all so hopeful and new, and living in the northeast we need to celebrate as soon as the snow melts, or before, if the snow overstays its welcome!

  • What bird makes you smile when you spot it?

The cardinals in my backyard. They are so vibrant, and the males are such show-offs!

  • Do you prefer the ocean or the mountains?

When I lived in the mountains, I couldn’t wait to get to the shore. If I lived at the shore, I’d probably want to go to the mountains! But I always need as many jaunts to the sea as possible in any given year, maybe next week…

    1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful answers! It is fun learning these things about those with whom we correspond. Sometimes I think of my grandmother who had penpals she corresponded with her whole life and never met! When I was a kid, it was popular to have penpals, long before social media could join us in seconds. When I was in fifth grade I had a penpal from Norway, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning all about his country and traditions, little things we didn’t really have access to anywhere else, even at my favorite place in the world –– our little library!

      1. Yes, one of the things I love from blogging is this possibility of knowing people from all around the world even if maybe we would never see each other…being able to interact and learn everyday new things is so beautiful! It is pretty much like a library nowadays 😉
Wish you a wonderful Sunday Dorothy! 🤗🌸

Loved your responses! We have much in common! I believe the MHZ Choice streaming service has an Inspector Dupin series, by the way. In any case, I’ll check that one. I also like the Martin Walker Bruno series.

  5. LOVED it!!!!! Congrats. Thank you for nominating me too.

      1. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  6. Hello!! Thank you so much for nominating my blog for the Sunshine Blogger Award! So humbled and honored to be in your list of nominees! I have my homework cut out for me to answer all your questions before I post my responses and nominate other bloggers that I enjoy.

I wanted to let you know that I love your blog for the fact that you take traditional American recipes that I have salivated over for decades but never been able to have because I am a lifelong vegetarian since birth. My entire family going back generations have been vegetarian. But living in America I have always wondered how I can make all those delicious American dishes vegetarian. I love your innovative take on the classics. Thank you!!! And thank you again for nominating me. I will post my responses to your prompts soon 😘😊

    1. You are so very welcome! I appreciate the complement deeply. I love all the foods I grew up with, but neither my body nor the planet can sustain that kind of cooking, so I’m always looking for a vegetarian way of offering up a satisfying alternative.
